Comparing Kia Electric Vehicles: EV6 vs. EV9

As the world of electric vehicles (EV) continues to evolve, we’re bound to see more battery powered vehicles on our everyday commutes. After all, statistics from the U.S. The Department of Energy shows that electric vehicles help improve fuel economy, lower fuel costs, and reduce tailpipe emissions. So, it’s no wonder that automakers want to make the transition into the world of EVs — and Kia Motors is no exception.

The recently released Kia EV6, and concept vehicle EV9, are two of the latest Kia electric vehicles. Continue reading to learn all about these cars and how they differ, so you can decide which one to get for yourself!

What is an EV?

An electric vehicle is a car that is either partially or fully powered by an electric charge. These vehicles are becoming more and more desirable to manufacturers and consumers because they cost less to maintain and are more environmentally friendly than internal combustion engine (ICE) cars. There are two main types of electric vehicles on the market:

All-Electric Vehicles

All-electric vehicles are cars that are powered by one or more electric motors, rather than requiring gasoline. These cars have a standard range of 200 to 300 miles — but mileage capabilities will likely increase as newer models are released. All-electric vehicles have become so desirable to consumers because they require less upkeep than ICE vehicles.

In addition to their low maintenance requirements, another perk is that all-electric vehicles can be charged from the comfort of your home. However, if you notice your car low on charge when you’re out-and-about, you can simply find your nearest charging station just like you would a gas station. Depending on what type of EV you have, it can take anywhere from 30 minutes to eight hours to fully charge your car.

Plug-In Hybrid Vehicles

Plug-in Hybrid electric vehicles (also commonly referred to as PHEV) offer both gas-only and electric-only driving. With smaller batteries than all-electric vehicles, PHEVs have an electric range of 10 to 55 miles — during which they produce no tailpipe emissions. When the car uses up all of its available electrical range, it’ll switch back to being gas powered and operate like a conventional car that can deliver up to 300 miles.

The Kia EV6

The 2022 Kia EV6 is the first dedicated Kia electric vehicle. This vehicle is a small crossover/hatchback with a sleek exterior, sophisticated interior design, and impressive driving range. Let’s take a closer look into what makes this car so unique:

Interior

The interior of the Kia EV6 displays an intuitive and modern design. It’s comfortable, spacious and offers more than enough room for all of your passengers. The interior features vegan leather that is made from recycled materials, but feels just as premium as other cars in its class, and is paired with metallic accents. In addition to the comfortable interior seating, there is a 12.3 inch infotainment screen displayed in the front that can be used for navigation and entertainment.

Exterior

The Kia EV6 has a modern-looking exterior that is guaranteed to turn heads from any angle. From its sleek, downward-facing hood that emphasizes its futuristic headlights, to the rear of the car being illuminated with a wrap-around lightbar, this car is the definition of stylish and sporty.

Drivability and Range

The Kia EV6 drives like an absolute dream — as it delivers roughly 258 lb-ft torque and 225 horsepower. Providing incredible acceleration along with responsive steering and smooth suspension to make every ride a joy ride. The car also offers three driving modes — eco, normal, and sport, to accommodate all drivers needs.

Delivering up to 310 miles of range on a single charge, the Kia EV6s range is quite impressive in comparison to other EVs. In addition to the great mileage, this car supports charging speeds up to 350kW — which can fully charge your vehicle in under an hour.

The Kia EV9

The Kia concept EV9 will be arriving in the US in late 2023. This SUV is similar in shape and size to the Telluride, but offers an all-electric range and updated features that are sure to impress drivers. Let’s take a closer look into what makes this car so desirable:

Interior

The Kia EV9 has a truly transformative interior. With a large panoramic roof, 29 inch ultra-wide display, any ride in this EV is a scenic one. In addition to the upgraded interior, the EV9 also modeled Tesla by ditching the traditional circular steering wheel and replacing it with a futuristic yoke “wheel.”

The seating layout inside the Kia EV9 is similar to that of the Telluride — three rows of seats that face forward. However, when the vehicle isn’t moving and is in “pause mode,” it allows for the first and third rows to face each other while the second row of seats flattens out into a table. A second seating mode, named “enjoy mode” allows for all three rows of seats to swivel towards the back allowing you and your passengers to look outside from the tailgate.

Exterior

The exterior of the EV9 is cutting-edge and all new. One of the most noticeable upgrades is the frontal view. The front of the Kia EV9 is digital with LED headlights and vertical day-time running lights. The car measures 194 inches in length, 81 inches in width, and 70 inches in height — making it shorter than the Telluride, but a bit wider.

Additionally, the hood vent area doubles as a solar panel that helps recover some of the electric energy that the EV9 uses. And just like other models, the EV9 ditches the traditional mirrors for a camera monitoring system.

Drivability and Range

Much of the information on the EV9’s drivability and range has not yet been announced. However, Kia claims a 300 mile driving range for the EV9 and just like the EV6, it will be able to charge on 350kW fast charging stations.

So, What’s the Difference?

These Kia electric vehicles are similar in some ways, but also completely unique. The Kia EV6 is smaller than the EV9, and has more of a modern feel. Whereas the EV9 is bigger and has more of a futuristic feeling to it. Ultimately, if you’re choosing between these two vehicles, the decision will come down to what you value as a driver and car buyer. With new models constantly being released, it can be hard to keep up with the latest cars on the market. Discover the main differences between the Kia EV6 and EV9.

Both vehicles offer an impressive range, great features, and sophisticated style — so the decision between these Kia electric vehicles will be a tough one.
