How Often Should You Get Your Kia an Oil Change?
Kia Oil Change Interval Guide | Synthetic Oil
Change Service in Burlington, NC
The old rule of changing your oil every 3,000 miles stuck around long after engines and oil got better. Today, most Kias can go much longer between oil changes. How long, however, depends on the oil you use and how you drive.
Here’s what Kia recommends, which oil your Kia needs, and the signs that an oil change shouldn’t wait.
Kia’s Recommended Oil Change Interval
Under Kia’s normal maintenance schedule, most Kia gas engines need an oil change and filter change every 8,000 miles or 12 months, whichever comes first. If you don’t drive much, the 12-month mark still applies. Oil breaks down over time even when the car sits.
Kia’s severe schedule shortens that to every 5,000 miles or 6 months. Kia’s list of severe conditions includes:
- Frequent short trips under 5 miles
- Heavy traffic or stop-and-go driving
- Towing or carrying loads on the roof
- Driving on dusty or unpaved roads
- Repeated driving on hills
A lot of Burlington drivers fit at least one of those. Quick errands around town and rush hour on I-40/85 both count. If that sounds like your routine, plan on the 5,000-mile interval.
Kia also recommends switching to the severe schedule once your vehicle passes 10 years or 100,000 miles.
Does Your Kia Need Synthetic Oil?
Yes. Kia’s owner’s manuals call for full synthetic oil that meets API SN PLUS standards or higher. Many current Kia engines use 0W-20, and some use 0W-16, so check your owner’s manual or the oil fill cap for the right grade.
According to Kia, if you use a lower-grade oil, including conventional or semi-synthetic, you’re supposed to follow the severe schedule and change it every 5,000 miles. A cheaper oil change can end up costing you more visits.
Kia’s manuals also warn against adding engine oil additives. They can change the oil’s properties and, in Kia’s words, may cause serious engine failure. Stick with the right oil and skip the bottles on the store shelf.
What About the Oil Life Monitor?
Some newer Kias have an oil life monitor that tracks your driving and estimates when you need to change your oil. If you drive hard or make lots of short trips, it may alert you before the 8,000-mile mark.
Follow the alert when it comes on, but don’t push past the maximum interval in your manual if it doesn’t. The system also needs to be reset after each oil change, which our technicians handle as part of the service.
Do Hybrids Need Oil Changes?
Yes. Hybrid models like the Sportage Hybrid, Sorento Hybrid, and Niro still have a gas engine, and that engine needs regular oil changes like any other. Fully electric models like the EV6 and EV9 don’t use engine oil, but they still need tire rotations, brake checks, and other routine service.
Signs Your Kia Is Overdue for an Oil Change
Even if you’re on schedule, keep an eye out for these:
- Oil pressure warning light. This one is urgent. Pull over when it’s safe, turn off the engine, and check the oil level. Driving with low oil pressure can seriously damage your engine.
- Oil life or maintenance reminder on your dashboard.
- Low oil on the dipstick. It’s normal for engines to use a little oil between changes, so Kia recommends checking the level regularly.
- Dark, gritty oil. Fresh oil is amber. Oil that looks black and feels sandy between your fingers is overdue for a change.
- Ticking or knocking sounds from the engine, especially on startup.
- A burning oil smell inside the cabin.
How to Check Your Oil
Park on level ground, turn off the engine, and let it sit for a few minutes to let the oil settle. Pull the dipstick, wipe it clean, push it all the way back in, then pull it out again. The oil should sit between the two marks. If it’s near or below the low mark, top it off with the correct oil or bring it in.
